By surface analysis, waard (“value”, pedicative adjective) + -e (abstract noun suffix). From Middle Dutch werde which still has the expected i-mutation (compare kou, hulde), from Proto-West Germanic *werþī f. In Middle Dutch the forms warde, waerde arose under influence of the adjective. Cognate with German Würde f.
