Inherited from Ottoman Turkish پرچم (perçem, “tuft of hair; forelock”), from Classical Persian پرچم (parčam, “banner”). Nişanyan suggests that Persian word is a compound of بال (pal, “wing”) and چمیدن (čamidan, “to strut, flaunt”), while Gerhard Doerfer argues that the Persian word is an Oghuz borrowing.
