From Proto-Central Philippine *kúha(ʔ) (“to get; to take”). Compare Central Bikol kua, Cebuano kuha, Kapampangan kua, Maranao kowa, and Tausug kawa'. According to Zorc (2021), it might be from Proto-Austronesian *kuSa (“work”) with semantic reassignment. Compare Kavalan kuway (“to work in the field”) and Isnag kuwa (“to work”).
