From Old Swedish kabel (“heavy rope”), kabbla (plural) (15th c.), from Old Norse kabill (14th c.), by some merit a derivative of kabb- (“spool, roll”) + -ill (agent suffix), related to kafli (“roll; handle, swordhilt”), but also a derivative of Old Northern French cable, Occitan câble, from Late Latin capulum (“lasso, rope, halter; handle, swordhilt”), from Latin capiō (“to take, seize”).
