From Old Norse *fjon (attested in the placename Fioni, Fyn, ca 1050), of Unknown origin. Possibly Inherited from Proto-Germanic *fīƀuna- or *fīṷuna-. Attested in Swedish since 1538. Cognate with Norwegian fjon and fjun, and Danish føn (“soft hair, down, fluff”), fyn (“cottongrass”). Related to Old Norse fífa (“cottongrass”), Old Norse fífill (“dandelion, etc”).
