Etymology

Inherited from Latin dictus. In some Old Spanish texts, it originally appeared as decho; it was later altered with the influence of the -i- from conjugated forms of decir (e.g. digo, dice, diga, etc.), or a result of metaphony from palatalization. Compare English dictum.
