Possibly ultimately from Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stériphos). Alternatively, it may be derived from Vulgar Latin *exstirpus or Vulgar Latin *extirpus, from Latin exstirpo. Compare Romanian sterp, Albanian shterp, probably from the same source, and Venetan sterpa, Friulian sterpe.
