scutec

Pronunciation: /ˈsku.tek/

“scutec” is a Romanian word. Its meaning in English:

noun

  1. nappy, diaper (an absorbent garment worn by a baby, or by someone who is incontinent.)

In Romanian

  1. bucată de pânză, de flanelă, de pichet etc., de obicei dreptunghiulară, cu care se înfașă sugarii.

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly from Slavic *skutъ, or from Vulgar Latin *scuticum, from Latin scutica (“a leather lash, whip”) (itself borrowed from Ancient Greek σκύτος (skútos)), and probably confused with derivatives of cutis (“leather”) (compare cutica). Therefore, the meaning could have changed from a leather belt to that of fabric or cloth in general. Cognate to Aromanian scutic. Cf. also Albanian skutë…
