bade

“bade” is a Romanian word. Its 3 meanings in English:

noun

  1. older brother
  2. older man
  3. a hillbilly, a yokel, a bumpkin; a poorly educated man from the countryside

In Romanian

  1. (pop.) termen politicos de adresare către un om matur sau mai vârstnic (de la țară); nene.
  2. termen mângâietor folosit de femeile de la țară pentru bărbatul iubit.

Etymology

Unknown. Coincides with Bulgarian бате (bate), бачо (bačo), Serbo-Croatian bato, bača, Hungarian bátya, which could have been borrowed from Romanian. The term might belong to a substratum word from an Indo-European root for father. Compare baci and Russian батюшка (batjuška). A relation to the dialectal words *bade ("old") and *bad ("to get old") in Lazio, doesn't appear to be coincidental.
