From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ʀibu. First attested in the Kedukan Bukit inscription, 683 CE, as Old Malay [script needed] (rivu), in the form sarivu (current spelling seribu). The cognate Old Cham form saribu is attested in the Đông Yên Châu inscription of the 4th century.
