Borrowed from Arabic رِيَال (riyāl) from Portuguese real, from Latin rēgālis (“royal”), from rēx (“king”) + -ālis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs (“ruler, king”, compare with Sanskrit राजन् (rājan)). Doublet of riyal and raja.
