From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baraŋ (“marker of indefiniteness”). Meaning of "thing", "goods" or "item" was a late innovation in western Indonesia. First attested in the Talang Tuo inscription, 684 AD, as Old Malay [script needed] (varaṃ).
