From the same stem as the verb gult (“to lie down”), of which it was originally the iterative (and possibly causative) form, from Proto-Indo-European *gwel- (“dwelling-place, hole”), see also Lithuanian guolis (“resting place”). Originally it was an i-stem, as can be seen in dialectal forms like gulim, gulit instad of guļam, guļat. Cognates include Lithuanian gulė́ti, Sudovian gułd (< *gult).
