Fourth-declension noun. From Proto-Italic *weissus or *wissus, from Proto-Indo-European *wéydˢtus. Cognate with Old Irish fius (“knowledge”). As with the participle vīsus above, ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *weyd- (“to see, know”).
