Inherited from Malay perlu, from Javanese ꦥꦼꦂꦭꦸ (perlu), from Arabic فَرْض (farḍ, “obligation”). Doublet of fardu. Displaced native usah (“must; now chiefly in negative”), and Proto-Malayic *sa(n)dat, from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sadat (“in need, in want”) (whence Iban sandat and Tagalog salat) according to ACD.
