From Javanese ꦧꦧꦸ (babu, “female servant”, literally “mother”), from Old Javanese babu (“mother; older servant”), wawuh (“familiar, acquainted”), probably ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(ʔ)boʔ (“mother”). Compare with Temiar buk (“mother”), Jehai baboʔ (“woman”), Vietnamese vợ (“wife”) and Mon ၝောံ (bɜ̀ʔ)).
