Inherited from Middle French esclave, from Old French esclave (12th c.), a borrowing from Medieval Latin sclavus (“slave”), from Late Latin Sclavus (“Slav”). Doublet of slave. Chiefly a learned word, therefore not generally developed regularly into éclave, though this form is attested in Early Modern French.
