Etymology

From isä (“father”) + -o, through an earlier form isoi (attested in Agricola). SSA considers this word 'primarily western (Finnish)', although SMS remarks it is common in all dialect regions except Central and South Karelia. First attested as jso in c. 1401. The original senses probably were “father” as a noun, thence “big, grown-up, adult” as an adjective.
