karask
Pronunciation: /ˈkɑrɑsk/
“karask” is an Estonian word. Its meaning in English:
noun
- A loaf made from barley flour dough with buttermilk or sour milk, equivalent to a Celtic soda bread.
Etymology
Probably borrowed from Latvian karaša (dialectal Latvian karaška). Loaning in the opposite direction (i.e., from Estonian into Latvian) has also been proposed. Another theory suggests a derivation from the stem, which occurs in karge (“rough, coarse”) (from Proto-Finnic *karkëda), compare karastama (“to harden”).
