From Middle English stot, from Old English stott (“a hack, jade, or worthless horse”), from Proto-West Germanic *stott, *stutt, of uncertain origin; yet, probably related to Old Norse stútr (“young bull, steer”) (whence Danish stud (“a castrated bull, steer”), Swedish stut (“a steer”)).
