From Middle English brikel, brekil, brukel (“easily broken or shattered”), from Old English *bryċel, *brucol (as in hūsbryċel (“burglarious”, literally “house-breaking”), scipbrucol (“destructive to shipping, causing shipwreck”, literally “ship-breaking”), equivalent to break + -le.
