From Middle English *Scoche (attested in Scocheman, whence Scotchman), a contraction of Scottisch, whence Scottish. The chess opening is supposedly named after a correspondence game between Edinburgh, Scotland, and London, England. Doublet of Scottish, Scots, and schottische.
