From late Middle High German *pappe (“pap, mash”). The noun is attested in the 15th century, but compare the derivative pepelen (“to feed, foster”, modern päppeln) in the 13th century. According to Frings, who considered it originally Rhenish, ultimately a borrowing from Latin pappa (“word called by infants for food”).
