From Middle High German kriusel, derived from krūs, whence modern kraus (“frizzy, curly”). Doublet of Kräusel (“frizzle, squiggle”). The sense “spinning top” was borrowed from cognate Middle Low German krü̂sel into East Central German, whence it spread in the written language.
