Etymology

Contraction of older deau (“right; south”), from Proto-Celtic *dexswos (“right”). Cognate with Cornish dyghow, Breton dehou, Irish deas, Scottish Gaelic deas, Manx jiass. The sense "south" comes from the fact that the south is on the right-hand side of a person facing east. Compare the relationship between cledd (“left”) and gogledd (“north”).
