From the same source as vrtět (“to shake, wriggle, writhe”), Proto-Slavic *vьrtěti. Rejzek prefers a comparison with Latin forō (“to bore”) and borec (“to fight”) (both eventually from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (“to pierce”)).
